Inscribed on a label (not in the artist's hand),formerly on the back of the picture: Sir Edward Codrington/painted by Henry Briggs/June 1843. aged 73
Another label, similarly inscribed but in another hand, and a third label with biographical details of the sitter, were also formerly on the back of the picture.

This portraitback to top

The lower part of the picture is unfinished, particularly the chair, forearm and hand. It was lithographed by R. J. Lane, published 1845 (example in NPG). A copy by G. F. Clarke is in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Lady Bourchier bequeathed a portrait of her husband, Sir Thomas Bourchier (NPG 720), at the same time as this one. An earlier portrait of Codrington by Briggs was exhibited RA, 1836 (335).

Ruddy complexion, dark grey eyes, grey hair. Dressed in a white shirt, dark stock, and green/black coat. Seated in a red armchair.
