This is one of a large collection of original studies for Vanity Fair, which were owned and specially mounted by the first proprietor of the magazine, Thomas Bowles. The water-colour of Lord Colonsay was published in Vanity Fair as a coloured lithograph, on 13 September 1873, as 'Statesmen, no. 154', with the title, 'Scotch Law'.

White hair and whiskers. Dressed in a black tie, white shirt and dark grey suit. Seated on a red sofa presumably in the House of Lords (a peer's coronet appears in the top right-hand corner), with a black top-hat beside him, stuffed with papers.
