Canon Atkinson presented several portraits by his father to the NPG, including a self-portrait (NPG 930). Besides a miniature by R. Thorburn in the Scottish NPG, this is the only recorded portrait of Conolly. Atkinson was in Cabul from 1838 to 1841, and Conolly was there in 1840; he left in September on a special mission to Central Asia, where he was murdered.

Ruddy complexion, dark eyes, dark brown hair and beard. Dark grey coat.
