This drawing was done in the life school of the Royal Academy, where Lear was a student, and was sent, together with others, in an undated letter to his parents (copy, NPG archives): 'No.4 old Abraham Cooper, the animal & battle painter.Very like. He is a most benevolent man & always ready to assist in doing good.' This drawing was sent with one of Augustus Egg (NPG 1456(5)), dated '1845'. Cooper was a visitor at the life school in that year.
