Inscribed on a label on the back of the panel, in an old hand: Mr Lewis Cubitt painted by Boxall/1845

Lord Ashcombe, a descendant of the sitter, confirmed the identification (memorandum of an interview, 10 April 1959, NPG archives), and stated that he knew the writing on the label, but did not know which member of the family had written it (he had seen similar labels of the same type). A comparison with a portrait of Cubitt by an unknown artist at the offices of Holland, Hannen and Cubitt further establishes the identity. No other portraits of Cubitt are known.

Healthy complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. Dressed in a white shirt, black neck-tie and coat. Seated in a red-covered chair. Dark table to left with papers, inkstand and quill pen on it. Background colour various tones of brown and grey.
