Inscribed (bottom of the drawing): This rough sketch is intended as the model/for size, style of vignetting, character & shape of back-/-ground and position on the steel of the/Portrait of the Honble Fox Maule.

The inscription probably refers to the engraving by J. Porter, after a painting by Duncan, published Hodgson and Graves, 1838 (example in NPG). The location of Duncan's original oil portrait is not now known. The NPG water-colour is identical in pose to Porter's engraving though much more sketchy.
