The drawing is by the sitter's uncle, the identification resting on a pencil inscription: William Dance, Musician/by George Dance R.A. (the last half in M. H. Spielmann's handwriting) formerly on the back of the mount and now in registered packet in NPG archive 3058. A lithograph from 'a Sketch by W. P. Sherlock' shows him about fifteen years later but with a marked resemblance. A drawing in the Royal College of Music is less convincing.
