The quality of this mean drawing seems appropriate. The identity may be confirmed by the posthumous engravings, none of which, however, names the artist. The Rd Cooper named in the inscription was probably the miniaturist Richard Cooper who exhibited at the RA between 1793 and 1799. An extended engraving by G. Scott, published in 1805, shows Dancer three-quarter length seated in a sparse interior, his left hand covering coins on a table.
