NPG 2493 is dated according to the apparent age of the sitter; it is the only known painted self-portrait by De Loutherbourg. Might the distinctive arm-rest have been the ‘rising arm rest with stuffed top’ in the De Loutherbourg sale (Coxe, 18 June 1812)?

Brown eyes, white hair; wearing a red scarf, blue coat, red waistcoat and black breeches; round the edge of his palette (from the left): flake white with vermilion above, yellow ochre, brown ochre, raw umber, burnt umber and ivory black; in the centre a flesh tint.1
