The portrait was probably commissioned by Murray for the gallery of literary celebrities at 50 Albemarle Street. Phillips's Sitter Book records a portrait painted 4 April 1826 and exhibited RA that year; this is NPG 2441 and appears to be the only major portrait of Denham in existence.

Head and shoulders to left in dark green coat, brown burnous with crimson trimmings; dark brown curly hair, fair moustache, grey eyes, fair complexion; gold ring on little finger.
