An oil study and a half-length replica of this portrait are in the Scottish NPG. A related pencil drawing was in the collection of Mrs Rawnsley of Grasmere in 1955, apparently that now at Dove Cottage.

Sallow complexion, dark grey-green eyes, brown hair. Dressed in a white shirt, dark stock, black waistcoat and trousers, dark brown coat. Seated in a wooden armchair with green covering. Wooden table at right with brown leather-bound book and an unidentified red object behind. Background colour brown.
