On the reverse of NPG 3037 is a pen and ink sketch of a dead mallard, and pencil inscriptions in various hands. These raise the possibility that both it and NPG 3036 might be self-portraits rather than portraits of the other brother. For the present, and in the absence of other images of the boys, their identities remain as established by Marion Harry Spielmann in 1900. [1]

Footnotesback to top

1) Spielmann 1900b, NPG 3037 repr. p.112: the identification rests on the caption to the illustration. See also Spielmann’s 1939 letter to Henry Hake, 23 Feb. 1939, NPG RP 3023: ‘N.B. In regard to the portraits of Maurice and Edward Detmold, which you now have, I have referred to my article on them in the Magazine of Art of 1900, and I find confirmation of my belief that the portrait of Maurice was drawn by Edward, and that of Edward drawn by Maurice.’
