The drawing was no.22a of vol.5 (second series) of the Butleigh Court sketchbooks originally belonging to the Greville Neville family and acquired by Messrs T. Agnew & Sons in 1954; it was in their January 1957 exhibition as no.98. The album was subsequently broken up and the drawing of Disraeli offered to the NPG together with the companion drawing of Mrs Maria D'Israeli which was declined. They were both preparatory studies for Downman's portraits dated 180 now at Hughenden Manor (National Trust Guide, 1973, nos.30 and 31); a large oil copy attributed to Shee is also at Hughenden (152).
