Smart's superb drawing is a typical study for a miniature and was among a unique collection of eighteen Camperdown naval officers drawn by him and later used for a composite engraving, Commemoration of the XIth October MDCCXCVII, by J. Parker and G. Noble set in a framework designed by Smirke and published by Bowyer & Edwards at the Historic Gallery, Pall Mall, 1803 (Daphne Foskett, John Smart, 1964, p 33). The drawing of Duncan was framed with those of Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Onslow (Monarch) and Captain James Walker (Monmouth), neither purchased from Colnaghi's.
