The portrait is a studio replica of Lawrence's original oil on panel at Windsor Castle (Sir Oliver Millar, The Later Georgian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, 1969, 896, plate 225), the face of good quality possibly painted by Lawrence himself. It is listed without provenance in E. S. Bain's Catalogue of Portraits in Serjeants' Inn, 1868, p 4.

Half-length seated in a red-upholstered chair, black suit, black velvet waistcoat, white neckcloth and shirt-frill, gold seal at waist; white hair and thick white eyebrows, grey eyes, fresh rosy complexion; plain greenish-brown background.

Serjeants' Inn and given to the NPG by the Society of Judges and Serjeants-at-Law in 1877.
