All three drawings of Etty by Lear were executed in the life school of the Royal Academy in 1845; Etty was a visitor in this year. One of them was enclosed by Lear in a letter to his family of 1845 (copy, NPG archives): 'No.1 is a sketch of Etty and, though I say it, very like.'
