In a letter to Sir Lionel Cust of 5 July 1899 (NPG archives), Mrs Bray wrote: 'When I copied the miniature of Mr Evans in 1841 which belonged to his daughter, I understood that Carlisle had four or five more copies for the different members of the family'. The identity of Carlisle is not known, and neither his copies nor the original miniature are known to have survived. These are the only recorded portraits of Robert Evans. George Eliot met Mrs Bray in 1841, and became an intimate of her family. Her early intellectual development owed much to this friendship.
