According to the husband of the donor, the Rev C. P. Longland (letters of 27 January and 4 March 1880, NPG archives), this portrait was given to Fielding in exchange for a picture by him of the Sussex Downs, which was subsequently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum (possibly the water-colour, South Downs, Sussex). After her father's death in 1855, Miss Fielding gave the portrait back to Boxall, expressing a hope that it might some day enter a worthy public collection. Boxall himself spoke of it as a portrait that should be offered to the National Portrait Gallery.
