The original portrait by Chatelain of 1840 is in the collection of Brinsley Ford, exhibited SKM, 1868 (426), reproduced The Letters of Richard Ford, edited R. E. Prothero (1905), facing p 172. John Murray first published Ford's Handbook to Spain in 1845. It was common for the firm to acquire portraits of their more successful authors.

Ruddy complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair. Dressed in green and brown neckerchief, white shirt and dark brown coat with red stripes on the lapels, and wearing a gold (?) cameo ring. Background colour green.
