Inscribed with spurious monogram and date: HJ 1793; the original signature was scratched into the background colour and has been painted over.

The portrait belongs to the period of the Prince's marriage to Mrs Fitzherbert whose miniature portrait on ivory by Janvry, dated 1796, is in the V&A Museum (P.46-1929). Another copy, one of a pair with the Princess of Wales, signed and dated 1796, was at Christie's 2 May 1961 (184) bought Frost & Reed. Bartolozzi's engraving of the Prince and Princess of Wales was published by Janvry in 1797.

Head and shoulders profile silhouette mainly in bare ivory with faint wash and stipple for modelling with white lead used for the highlights; Prussian blue background (repainted). Double-sided bezel locket originally backed with glass since replaced with card.

Possibly the miniature lent by H. H. Gibbs to Burlington Fine Arts Miniature Exhibition 1889, p 135. Given to the NPG by Francis Wellesley 1915.
