Inscribed verso, possibly added by the artist:1 Mr S. Gilpin, RA/Painted by/W Sherlock.
1 That is, NPG 4328 appears to date from before 1797 when Gilpin was elected RA.

Sherlock copied Walton’s portrait of Sawrey’s brother, William Gilpin, in 1783 or 1785 (see NPG 4418) which conceivably indicates the date of NPG 4328.

The fading of the colours complicates description: probably grey eyes and light hair, wearing a grey coat.
