This water-colour was published as a coloured lithograph in Vanity Fair on 30 August 1873, as no. 67 of 'Men of the Day', entitled 'The Constable of the Tower'. The original studies for the Vanity Fair cartoons were owned by the first proprietor of the magazine, T. S. Bowles, and specially mounted by him.

Fresh complexion, greyish-blue eyes(?), grey hair. Dressed in a dark stock, white shirt, grey waistcoat, black frock coat, grey trousers, and black shoes with black bows. Background colour greyish-blue.
