The drawing is possibly a study for Jones's oil 'The Battle of Waterloo' in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea (see Richard Ormond, National Portrait Gallery: Early Victorian Portraits, 1973, p 25); a group of oil sketches for the same picture was lent by Messrs Appleby Bros to the Waterloo Exhibition, 1965. The sketchbook also contained drawings for other pictures, among them a similar drawing of Wellington's profile inscribed: Duke of Wellington/at the passing of the Catholic/Relief Bill - 1830 (compare the studies of Sir George Wood, NPG 5258).
