The only surviving portrait of Haward, identified by an early 19th-century label on the stretcher: This/Portrait of Francis Haward. A.R.A./1794. Engraver to H.R.H. the Prince of/Wales etc. Painted by/Ozias Humphry Esq R.A. It is assumed that 1794 refers to the date of the pastel (Humphry’s activity as a pastellist was confined to the years 1791-97).

Bequeathed by Charles Drury Edward Fortnum 1899.1
1 Fortnum (1820-99) collector, Trustee of the British Museum and benefactor of the Ashmolean. The (original) frame bears neatly painted in red the letters P.S.EF. which remain unexplained.
