Unfortunately Hickey's Memoirs do not extend to this date but Thomas specialised in this type of intimate conversation piece, exhibiting several at the RA between 1806 and 1838. A similar group, of the Wansey family dated 1819, was at Sotheby's 27 June 1973 (63).

Whole-length seated to left with Indian youth and a dog; Hickey in a close-fitting brown wig, brown eyes, pale complexion, brown coat, buff waistcoat, white breeches, buff-topped riding-boots, paper in left hand; youth in European clothes, green tail-coat, grey breeches and riding boots; landscape in left background, books in arched case right, silver inkstand and books on table, black top-hat and blue cloak bottom right.
