No artist's name is attached to this drawing which appears to be by a different hand to the portrait of his son by T. W. Harland (NPG 2913), though the same paper has been used and both drawings were given to the Gallery at the same time (Richard Ormond, National Portrait Gallery: Early Victorian Portraits, 1973, p 227). A third drawing, in red chalk of William Holl senior, was offered but declined. NPG 2912 is possibly by one of the sitter's sons, both artists of note. No other portrait of Holl is known.
