Acquired in 1864 as probably a portrait of the painter Richard Wilson, [1] but by 1879 it was described as Nathaniel Hone, [2] an identification which is above suspicion. NPG 177 appears contemporary with the self portrait in the National Gallery of Ireland (1003).
