This portraitback to top

The portrait has been ascribed to George Patten since its acquisition in 1899, probably on the basis of the stipple lettered 'Engraved by H R Cook, 1818, from a Painting by Patten'. George Patten was born in 1801 and was a student at the RA 1816-18, practising as a miniaturist until 1830. His father William Patten ceased painting miniatures in 1817, possibly because of failing eyesight. It seems likely that he then turned to full-sized portraiture and the engraving, lettered with the surname only, refers to him rather than to a relatively unknown son.
