Owen painted two portraits of Howley, both as Bishop of London. The first, in Fulham Palace, was painted c.1817, engraved in mezzotint by S. W. Reynolds, published February 1818, and exhibited RA 1818 (79), half-length sitting to left holding a Greek Testament open at Corinthians. The second type, NPG 1552, shows him six or seven years older, standing to right, painted c.1823-5. No engraving of this exists and its provenance is unknown though it may have belonged to a descendant William Howley Kingsmill who owned the Chantrey bust. The portrait exhibited RA 1813 as the Bishop of London in fact represents Bishop John Randolph who died of apoplexy in July 1813.
