This posthumous portrait was painted with the help of two photographs, now in the collection of Lieutenant Commander A. F. Inglefield, who presented examples of each to the NPG. Also in his collection is a letter from Collier to H. B. Inglefield, dated 19 March 1897:

'It has been a very interesting portrait to me to paint and I have liked doing it. I shall be having a photographer here before very long and I will then have it photographed for you. The picture shall be sent to you on Monday the 29th or Tuesday the 30th.'
A platinotype print of it was executed by H. Dixon and Son (example in NPG). Inglefield is wearing an admiral's uniform of the 1856 pattern (apparently amended inaccurately in 1879), with the star and cross of the Bath (KCB), and (from left to right) the Turkish Medal for the Crimea, the Naval General Service Medal with a bar for 'Syria' (1840), the Turkish Order of the Medjidie (4th class), the Arctic Medal (1818-55), the Crimea Medal with a bar for 'Sebastopol', and the Sultan of Turkey's Medal for Syria (1840).

Pale eyes, greyish hair and whiskers. Dressed in a dark blue naval uniform, with gold-braided collar, epaulettes, cuffs, sword-belt, trouser-stripe and sword tassel, gilt buttons, and white, red and silver stars and medals and multi-coloured ribbons, gilt dress sword, black and gold-braided cocked hat and white gloves. Background colour dark brown.
