King James II

Copied from the Kneller head seen in NPG 666 and the ‘Pepys’ portrait of 1688, suggesting that NPG 6277 was made after James’s exile in France. When V. J. Murrell inspected NPG 6277 in 1975 he tentatively suggested it might be of French workmanship (notes in NPG archive).

Hon. Frederic H. A. Wallop (1870-1953); in 1932-33 given to his nephew, Alan Evans (c.1890-1974), by whom bequeathed to the National Gallery, London, 1974; lent to the NPG 1974 (L152/15) until permanently transferred in 1994.
