The drawing is undated and unrecorded in the British Museum Linnell sketchbooks. He appears to be in his late 60s. Lot 82 in the Linnell sale consisted of a packet of 16 drawings of which 7 (Bagster, Crotch (2), Murray, Perry and Young) remain in the NPG, the others being sold at a modest profit to the Scottish NPG, the Office of Works, Sir Edmund Gosse and elsewhere.

Linnell family then Christie's (Linnell sale) 15 March 1918 (82) bought Leggatt on behalf of the NPG.
