Ribeiro has pointed out how the fanciful, part classical ‘renaissance’, costume emphasises Kauffmann’s status as an artist and, perhaps, her disdain for the intricacies of high fashion. [1] NPG 430 has been dated between 1770 and 1775; [2] the elegant pose, not unrelated to the Reynolds portrait of c.1777, was subsequently developed in the self portraits sold Sotheby’s, 14 June 2001, lot 2, of c.1775-80, at Chur of c.1780, and in Munich of 1784.

At her death it came by Will to my late Uncle Johann Kauffmann who left it by Will to me. I declare this to be the truth’. But see the Reynolds portrait of c.1777-78. There was a second portrait of Kauffmann at Saltram.
