In his 'Account Book' Richmond lists this portrait as follows: 'E [i.e. exhibited] Rev John Keble - own RA'. It was engraved by W. Holl, published 1864 (example in British Museum), and was bequeathed at the same time as a drawing of Samuel Rogers (NPG 1044). Other portraits of Keble by Richmond are as follows:
1 1844. Water-colour, Keble College, Oxford, bought Christie's, 11 April 1967 (lot 142), from the collection of Lord Coleridge. Listed in 'Account Book', p 35. Engraved by S. Cousins, published for Richmond, 1845 (example in NPG), engraving reproduced G. Battiscombe, John Keble: A Study in Limitations (1963), facing p 268.
2 1874. Marble bust, Keble College. Reproduced Battiscombe, facing p 269. Listed in 'Account Book', p 91. Richmond records that he began work on a bust of Keble in 1872 (presumably the clay model), and on a life-size bust (presumably the marble) in 1873.
3 1876. Painting, Keble College, presented by the artist. Listed in 'Account Book', p 93. Exhibited VE, 1892 (231). The head is based on the NPG drawing. A replica for Dr Talbot is recorded by Richmond in 1889, and a copy by Miss Donkin is at Oriel College, Oxford. The three portraits at Keble and Oriel (excluding no.1) are listed by Mrs R. L. Poole, Catalogue of Oxford Portraits, II (1925), 98, and III (1925), 283.
