Signed and dated on table to left: TP (in monogram) 1840, and inscribed on spine of book: NOVUM/TESTAMENTUM/GRAECUM; on back of canvas in neat lettering in ink is inscribed: This Portrait/of the/Revd John Kentish,/painted by Thos. Phillips Esq F.R.S., R.A./was presented to Mrs. Kentish, Sept. 5th 1840, by the Congregation of Protestant/Dissenters assembling in the New Meeting House, Birmingham, as a Testi-/monial of their Affection and Gratitude to their revered Pastor; for the un-/wearied zeal, Affectionate Solicitude, and undeviating faithfulness, with which/through a period of thirty seven Years, he has performed his duties/as a Minister of this Congregation, of their Veneration for his Pri-/vate Virtues, and of their Admiration of the Independence, Useful-/ness, Integrity and Consistency of his Public Life.

Half-length to left in black coat and waistcoat, white neckcloth and bow-tie, spectacles in left hand, white hair, brown eyes, fresh complexion.
