Accompanied in the Brockedon Album by a letter from the sitter, dated 10 October 1832. In a letter of 1 May 1834, John Lander wrote to Brockedon from Liverpool:
'May I request my dear Sir (if you have not already sent it off) that the sketch of my lamented brother, which you have so kindly promised me, may be left at your house, till you hear from me again. It is now become invaluable to me, & I should be afraid of some accident, were you to send it here by a strange hand. I shall keep it for ever in memory of my dear brother to whom I was tenderly attached & as a proof of your own extreme kindness to him & me.'
Presumably John Lander never collected the drawing, unless Brockedon executed a copy for his own album, and returned the original. This drawing was used as a study for paintings and a bust of Lander by Brockedon (see NPG 2442).
