A small pencil drawing in the British Museum is possibly a study for this, head and shoulders only, wearing spectacles and holding a paper instead of the book (Laurence Binyon, Catalogue of Drawings by British Artists … in the British Museum, III, 31); it is mounted with a portrait study of Emma his youngest daughter, later Mrs Mackenzie the donor of NPG 1843.

Half-length standing slightly to left, as a venerable old man holding a book; grey coat, green and yellow flowery waistcoat, white collar and grey cravat; long grey hair touched with yellow, grey eyes, ruddy complexion.

Provenanceback to top

Family possession and bequeathed to the National Gallery by his daughter Mrs Emma Mackenzie 1895; transferred (from the Tate Gallery) to the NPG in 1919.
