This is a reduced version of the portrait medallion of Latrobe executed by Woolner in Australia (a cast of the larger medallion, dated 1853, is owned by B. Venus); Amy Woolner describes the NPG medallion as 'quarter size'. Woolner went to Australia in search of gold in 1852; after his failure at the gold diggings, he resumed his old profession in 1853, and returned to England in 1854. One of the companions with whom he travelled to Australia was a relation of Latrobe, who was responsible for obtaining several commissions for Woolner. A bronze cast of NPG 1672, taken in 1966, is in the University of New South Wales.
