Presented at the same time as the bust by T. Campbell (NPG 1989). This portrait has in the past been tentatively attributed to W. H. Brooke, but this attribution does not seem very convincing. According to the donor (letter of 29 May 1923, NPG archives), it was painted when Lawrence was on leave at the age of about twenty-one. A copy was executed for the donor soon after its presentation.
