Though the sketch does not correspond exactly to the final figure of the Prime Minister in Hayter's 'Trial of Queen Caroline' (NPG 999), it is certainly very close and bears little relation to the wash drawings both of which are in profile. Another oil sketch, similar in size and treatment, is at Weston Park (Lord Bradford). Hayter's oil sketches for the 'trial' are unusual, the NPG possessing a head of Queen Caroline and a whole-length of Lord Holland (NPG 4940 and 5192).
Physical descriptionback to top
Half-length head to left in dark brown tail-coat, white waistcoat, white neckcloth and shirt-frill; grey hair, hazel eyes, pale complexion; plain dark red background. An old label fixed to the back wrongly identifies it with John Fawcett, stage manager of Covent Garden Theatre.

Bought from William Drummond, Covent Garden Gallery, 1979.
