The portrait shows Lodge as a man aged 35-40, probably painted between his election as FSA in 1787 and his appointment as Lancaster Herald in 1793, and possibly to mark his first major scholarly publication, Illustrations of British History, compiled from MSS in the College of Arms, 3 quarto volumes 1791.
