The drawing came from a sketchbook inherited by Miss Paton from friends of Mrs Heming who was a daughter of Wilson Lowry and had contributed several drawings in the book; another is of the chemist Andrew Ure. Another drawing by Mrs Heming of her father, similar in style but nearly full-face, was engraved by Thomson for The European Magazine, 1 September 1824, by Meyer 1825 and etched by Mrs Dawson Turner.

Head and shoulders to right, light brown hair, brown eyes, ruddy complexion, aged 45-50; brown coat, white collar and tie.
