This is a study for Richmond's finished portrait drawing in the collection of the Lyell family, which was anonymously lithographed (example in NPG), and engraved by C. Holl as the frontispiece to Mrs Lyell, Life, Letters and Journals of Sir Charles Lyell (1881), I; the original drawing is probably that listed in Richmond's 'Account Book' (photostat copy of original MS, NPG archives), p 60, under the year 1853. Another portrait of Lyell by Richmond was begun in 1868 but discontinued. Lady Lyell, the sitter's sister-in-law, who owned the finished drawing, wrote of the NPG's 'wretched likeness' (letter of 22 October 1904, NPG archives).
