This water-colour was engraved by J. Brown (example in NPG). The pose and head appear to be based on the water-colour by A. E. Chalon (the clothes are different), engraved by R. Artlett, published J. Fraser and H. T. Ryall, 1836 (example in NPG), for 'Eminent Conservative Statesmen'. The costume is based on the full-length water-colour by Chalon (the head is different), lithographed by R. J. Lane, published J. Mitchell, 1836 (example in NPG), probably the portrait exhibited RA, 1836 (592).

Dark complexion, brown eyes and hair. Dressed in a dark stock, white shirt and red, yellow and ermine judicial robes. Background colour brown.
