This drawing and the one below were both executed in the life school of the Royal Academy, where Lear was a student, and were sent by him to his family with an undated letter (copy in NPG archives): 'Nos. 1 and 2 are sketches of Maclise.' Maclise was a visitor at the life school in 1845 and 1846.
