The donor was asked to present the statuette by the artist, whom she apparently knew in Florence; she approached the Gallery through her cousin, Mrs Hornsby Drake, the adopted daughter of the famous collector, Sir William Drake. The statuette shows Marochetti seated on a flight of three box steps, holding a chisel and some clay in his hands; behind him on the top step is a partly open manuscript showing a man on horseback, with a modelling tool on top of it; below at the back are some more tools and another roll of paper or clay. Leaning against one side of the steps is a bas relief of a historical episode (possibly the attempted arrest of the five members of Parliament by Charles I), presumably by the sitter. Marochetti is dressed in a shirt and tie, trousers and waistcoat, a loose working robe, and indoor shoes.
