An earlier portrait by Lambert Marshall, now in the Mellon Collection, shows his father with a picture of two horses, on an easel to left, probably painted a few years after the coaching accident 1819; this was engraved and used to illustrate The Sporting Magazine, 1 September 1826 (Judy Egerton, British Sporting and Animal Paintings, 1978, pp 205 & 334). In the NPG portrait the subject, deceptively, looks several years older.
