The attribution to Clint came with the portrait's acquisition but little is known of its provenance. The style and date are feasible and Clint also painted a portrait of Mathews as Sharp in Garrick's The Lying Valet, half-length with hand and expression expecting a tip, plate in Oxberry's New English Drama, 1821.

Head and shoulders to right aged c.50, dark brown coat, buff waistcoat, white neckcloth and cravat; dark brown hair (or wig), light brown eyes, dark complexion, serious expression; cloudy sky background.
