Maurice's apparent age in this drawing suggests a date nearer 1840 than 1846, so this may not be the portrait exhibited in 1846. On the other hand, Laurence may not have exhibited the drawing immediately, or he may have made Maurice look younger than he was. An entry in the 'Journal' of Caroline Fox, 18 May 1846, may refer to it: 'Interesting time with Laurence ... He has much enjoyed F. D. Maurice's sittings lately, and dwelt upon the delicate tenderness of his character' (Memories of Old Friends: Being Extracts from the Journals and Letters of Caroline Fox, edited H. N. Pym (2nd edition, 1883), p 253).
