A portrait of Montefiore and a copy are listed in Weigall's 'Account Book' (photostat copy, NPG archives), under 1881 (511 and 512). Since both these were paid for, it seems unlikely that either is the NPG picture, which remained with the artist.

Healthy complexion, brown eyes, white beard. Dressed in a white stock, white shirt, light blue waistcoat, dark blue jacket and cap, and a green coat. Background colour brown.

The artist; Weigall Sale, Christie's, 6 July 1925 (lot 160), where it was presumably bought in; presented by members of the artist's family, 1928.
